Walasse Ting (1929–2010) was a Chinese-American visual artist and poet, celebrated for his vibrant, colorful paintings that combined elements of traditional Chinese art with Western modernism. Born in Wuxi, China, he studied briefly at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts before leaving for Paris in 1952. There, he connected with members of the avant-garde CoBrA group, including Karel Appel and Pierre Alechinsky.
In 1958, Ting moved to New York, where he became associated with Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Over time, he developed his own distinctive style, marked by bright acrylics, bold brushwork, and sensual imagery, often depicting women, animals, and flowers. His art fused Eastern calligraphic traditions with Western color fields.
Ting’s work has been acquired by museums around the world like Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum JAN an MOMA New York.
