Cole Morgan, born in 1950 in New York, moved to Europe in the 1970s after earning a BA in Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He spent two years studying art history and lithography at the Centro d’Arte Graffico in Florence, then studied at The Hague’s Vrije Akademie in 1973 and 1974.
Currently based in Belgium, Morgan maintains strong ties to the Netherlands, where he has gained significant recognition as an artist, as well as throughout Europe and the United States. For example, in 2007, his work was featured in exhibitions across the globe, including in Holland, Zürich, Seoul, San Francisco, and New York.
Morgan describes his approach to art as follows: “To explore my work is to engage in a journey of discovery, peeling back layers of composition, color, text, scratches, and lines, both deliberate and accidental—much like peeling an onion.”
“Throughout this visual journey, viewers will find themselves playfully misled. You’ll try to assign meaning and direction to the elements on the canvas, only to be led down a path that doesn’t lead where you expected. The texts and symbols you may think you’ve figured out may not have been meant to be deciphered at all.”
While the shapes, lines, and seemingly trivial placements might appear random, every detail has been carefully considered. There are no true ‘accidents’ in my work. I would describe this apparent randomness as ‘controlled spontaneity.’ When combined with a keen sense of balance and knowing when to stop, this process makes the act of painting a deeply rewarding experience.
